The past is prologue to future scenario planners.
196 BC: Ptolemy V ascends the throne of Egypt. But people still spit every time they say the first syllable of his name.
1625: Charles I becomes King of England. On the scaffold in 1649, he will say, "I must tell you that [the people's] liberty and freedom consists in having government…It is not their having a share in the government; that is nothing appertaining unto them. A subject and a sovereign are clean different things." Then the Irish executioner, brought in so that no Englishman would be involved, made Charles' head and his body clean different things and was rewarded with money he used to found what is still the King's Head Pub and Restaurant in Galway, Ireland (great traditional Irish music and dancing – still apparently celebrating the last time an Irishman killed a British monarch).
1794: The United States decides to supplement its already-existing armed maritime force, FSG scenario planning client the United States Coast Guard (founded 1790 as the Revenue Cutter Service), with a Navy comprised of six frigates. The immediate causes were the interdiction of American ships by French and British ships suspicious that the Americans were trading with the other side, and the Islamist threat of the day, the Barbary Pirates; the cost of the appropriation, $688,888.82. One of these frigates can still be seen in Boston Harbor – the U.S.S. Constitution.
1794: Denmark and Sweden form a neutrality pact. To this day, Danes and Swedes remain a bit stand-offish.
1964: Good Friday Earthquake hits Alaska. Largest earthquake ever to hit the United States at 9.2 on Richter scale. The Seward Highway must be raised, because it has permanently dropped by 8 feet and is below the high tide mark in some areas; some parts of Kodiak are permanently raised 30 feet. Tsunamis strike numerous Alaskan coastal towns and cause damage in British Columbia. 16 people are killed by tsunamis in California and Oregon, and Hawaii also sees damage.
1998: The FDA approves Viagra from FSG scenario planning client Pfizer. Thousands of trophy wives soon will feel old age creeping up on them, and subsequently millions of Americans will wonder why any couple would ever sit outdoors in separate bathtubs.
