FSG 2019 Highlights…and the Year Ahead

Peter J. Kennedy
Managing Principal

With 2019 winding down, FSG would like to take this opportunity to share some of the year’s highlights and to take a peek at what’s in store for the year ahead.

It’s been another busy year working with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), a seven-year partnership of which we are proud. The daunting challenge facing ACGME is to understand and anticipate how the US medical system (and US society in general) will evolve so that it can ensure resident physicians are prepared to serve patients well into the 2030 decade and beyond. The year began with a full workshop with the ACGME board, using detailed health care scenarios we had developed in 2018, and continued with FSG-ACGME working sessions to both evaluate workshop output and to draft a strategic plan. A final revised strategic plan will be presented to the ACGME Board in early February 2020.

Also in the health care domain, FSG facilitated a scenario-based strategic planning process for the Southern Illinois School of Medicine using ACGME future scenarios.  This pilot program was a great success and will serve as a model for future medical school scenario-planning projects.

In an entirely different sector, FSG developed five-to-ten year planning scenarios for a leading US financial services organization. The initial application of these financial services scenarios was talent development in the face of globalization, technological change (e.g., the rise of machine learning), shifting regulations, social and cultural changes, and non-traditional competition, among others.

And as for 2020…

We anticipate another busy year ahead, with work in health care, medicine, medical education and financial services.  We’re also exploring the development of rural development scenarios, to help public and private decision-makers wrestle with the challenges of population decline, climate change, infrastructure gaps, health care inadequacies and more.

Finally, 2020 is already shaping up as a one of the most important election years in recent US history.  The implications will be profound, whatever way it goes, and confounding new uncertainties are certain to arise – and certain to keep us scenario planners on our toes.

We wish all our clients, collaborators and friends a peaceful and happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
