The Future of Medical Education

The ACGME considers the future

FSG recently completed a look at the future of medicine and medical education for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). ACGME accredits the Residency Programs for future doctors – a critical task, and one that requires understanding what the future of medicine will demand of practitioners. With the ACGME Core Team, FSG developed four scenarios about the future of medicine. Our first project workshop involved ACGME stakeholders and partners who “lived” in the medical scenarios and developed models of how the US health care system would work in each scenario. A second workshop, bringing the ACGME Board of Directors into the process, used the same scenarios, along with the four US health care system models, to determine the requirements for advanced medical education and develop strategies for ACGME to continue improving residency education. ACGME is now implementing these strategies, as well as embarking on a path toward building strategic thinking into their ongoing activities. FSG will be playing a supporting role in some of those activities as ACGME continues to explore uncertainties in the future of medicine and medical education.
